Unmanned helicopters for resupply of troops behind enemy lines

Lockheed Martin has just finished a test run on a K-Max cargo helicopter, which has been transformed into an unmanned helicopter, capable of carrying loads which are then dropped, with a parachute, in order to resupply troops behind enemy lines or in rough terrain areas, with ammunition or equipment.

Thanks to a carousel with four hooks, this unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is capable of reaching different destinations over the course of a single mission, with up to four airdrops within a single trip, thus optimizing resources and allowing to save precious time and money.

The development of this unmanned vehicle is being taken care of, in cooperation with US Army, by Lockheed Martin and Kaman; the latter’s Connecticut airfield has witnessed the first operating tests. Thanks to mission management and control systems supplied by Lockheed Martin, the operating range of these helicopters, currently deployed in Afghanistan, can be stretched forward.

In fact, their load capacity can reach up to 3000 kilos, with a maximum height of approximately 5000 meters. Just to have an idea, Boeing’s Hummingbird UAV, lately mentioned on these pages, can only carry up to 1200 kilos of equipment, and on a single drop.

Thanks to its wide operating range, and to the ability to fly autonomously at long distances and in harsh environment, it will be possible to user K-Max both during the day and by night, exploiting its bulky load and the airdrop functions to minimize risks both for troops on the ground and for the vehicle itself.

Well, not yet to be honest… but a team of researchers from the University of Florida is working on a research project aimed at the development of a system which might ensure that video and photo cameras mounted on our ordinary cellphones could work much better in conditions of low lighting.

This system consists of a thin layer of film, containing LEDs, which could be applied not only to the camera viewer and display of a phone, but also find several applications for personal use and for security on the road.

For example, just think of how much we could benefit from having this film used on the windshield of our car, or on our glasses: a dramatic decrease of car accidents in low illumination conditions, and an improvement of living conditions for the visually impaired or for anyone having problems with night vision.

At the time, night vision systems are using a huge amount of electricity, and heavy glass lenses; this makes their usability in everyday conditions quite limited. On the contrary, using a LED film like the one that Florida researchers are working on, would reduce weight and encumbrance of any night vision equipment, making it available not only for personal use like in the examples above, but most of all in the military field, dramatically improving maneuverability in the current infrared night vision systems.

The research project should provide results within just 18 months, meaning that within a couple of years we might be seeing mobile phones that can be used as infrared cameras; with an improvement, this technology might be used also to detect and measure heat, making it very useful in the military, where it can be employed to detect enemies in the dark thanks to their body heat, or even at home, where we could just place our phone on our forehead for a while to measure… fever!

Whoever, during the course of his everyday job, must deal with sensitive or confidential information, such as for example credit card numbers, personal details, commercial or contractual information, knows very well that this data must be handles with the utmost care.
What often one may not know is that even though you delete this information, it is not completely erased from the memory of your computer, and might (inadvertently or not) be retrieved by third parties whose intentions may not always be honest.

Another potentially risky situation may originate from dismissed hard disk or magnetic storage supports, which are installed on a new computer or passed on to a colleague, and that may contain data, even if you think you have deleted it; this data may inadvertently circulate outside your office or organization, with unpleasant consequences.

To protect ourselves against these occurrences, we must use an appropriate secure deletion system. Before being able to reuse a magnetic storage means like a hard disk, it is advisable to perform some actions that can erase completely the stored data, making it impossible to be recovered or rebuilt at a later stage.

To do so, there is a device called HD Eraser, a machine which emits a strong local electromagnetic field. Just place the support you wish to erase (hard or floppy drive, audio or video cassette) on one side of the device, press the start button, and within a few seconds your hard drive will be completely demagnetized, and all data previously stored will be impossible to retrieve and use.

A bulletproof T-shirt? Nice and easy

Generally, when talking about bulletproof vests, the first thing that comes to our minds is certainly not a comfortable feeling. Usually, protection has a price, and often this price is paid in terms of comfort, wearing heavy armors that protect us from potential dangers but make it hard to move easily without sweating heavily.

In the future, all this could become a distant memory thanks to a research project from the University of South Carolina, which could make life much easier for those who have to wear a bulletproof vest, for example soldiers, police agents or personalities who might be exposed to terrorist or enemy threats.

In fact, scientists took a normal T-shirt, dipped it into a solution based on boron carbide, an extremely resistant ceramic material (it is the third most resistant on Earth) used in the production of bulletproof jackets. The result is a T-shirt that only at first glance looks like any other, but actually is a real armor, with the non marginal advantage of being lightweight and flexible.

Once it is immersed in this solution, the T-shirt is placed in an oven and heated, turning cotton fibers in carbon fibers. This transformation triggers a reaction which produces boron carbide. The fabric obtained is just a bit thicker than a normal one, but it is flexible and can easily be bent, unlike the standard type bulletproof vests used by police and military forces.

Furthermore, and this is particularly important for the military deployed in sunny areas such as Iraq, this fabric is also acting as an UV filter, protecting from harmful sun radiation. In the future, soldiers and police forces might be still protected, but while moving freely and without sweating, and the fabric might also be used for vehicle armors, much lighter than those currently in use.

Leica to present its first GPS digital camera

Leica has just announced the worldwide market launch of its V-Lux 20, a compact digital camera which, along with the usual characteristics of reliability and extreme precision which one can expect from anything manufactured by the German giant, sports a new feature which makes it the first standard type photo camera equipped with GPS positioning system.

A few days ago, we mentioned a GPS photo camera, suitable for extreme sports and leisure activities thanks to its protective outer shell. This one from Leica, at a first glance, looks like a normal camera, with a 12.1 megapixel processor, a 12x optical zoom, a 3” display and a plethora of functions which ensure a perfect shot and image quality.

Each time it takes a snapshot, along with the image it also records the exact geographical coordinates of the place depicted, in order to provide its user with absolute precision in managing their image library. For example, thanks to the automatic GPS data storage, you can load the images on your social network album, and this data will automatically be added to the picture information, automatically indicating the shot location.

With these characteristics, it can be a very useful tool not only to show your friends where exactly you spent your holidays (literally!), but mostly for a professional use, for example for geographical data collection for scientific or industrial usage.

On top of that, thanks to its small size, Leica V-Lux 20 (available at approximately 700 dollars) might be a travel companion for agents carrying out a surveillance operation or gathering intelligence data, adding a further level of detail by revealing the exact geographical location of a target or of the place where information is stored.

Regaining your sense of balance with an inflatable vest

Along with the sense of touch, the sense of balance, although it is not among the five basic ones, can be seriously compromised following to a disease, an accident or an injury. Rehabilitation therapies can last long, and during the therapy, the risk of a fall is always to be taken into consideration.

In order to minimize this risk, researchers from the Center for Advanced Surgical and Interventional Technologies at UCLA are working on what looks like a life vest which, if used by rehab patients, helps them maintain their balance.

It is an inflatable vest, not too different from those we can find on planes. What makes the difference is that it is inflated automatically instead of manually. In fact, on the outside the vest features some accelerometers, similar to those used on most smartphones, and some silicone inflatable balloons.

When the accelerometer detects a sudden movement which signals the danger of a fall, the silicone balloons are inflated in a way that gives the wearer an impulse that warns him against the fall, prompting him to react in the direction opposite to the one in which he is falling. The high pressure inflating of the membrane that contains the balloons works like a push which immediately lifts up the vest wearer.

The core of this system is an actuator, which provides a reaction time of approximately 60 milliseconds to inflate the balloons, enough to provide a real-time impulse. Compared to other systems which send an electrical vibration on their user’s skin, where the skin might get used to the stimulus and react slower with time, usage of balloons does not have this kind of side effects and allows for a constant immediate response, which guarantees a better rehabilitation therapy.

Recovering the sense of touch thanks to carbon nanotubes

Scientific research and technology can help improve our health and make our life better, especially for those who are impaired in one of the five vital senses. In this case, we are talking about the sense of touch, which can be lost following to an accident or a disease affecting the Central Nervous System, but that can be artificially recovered, at least partly.

In fact, a research project at the Tennessee-based Oak Ridge National Laboratory seems to provide great results thanks to carbon nanotubes so thin that a glass fiber just 4 times thicker than a human hair can contain up to 20 thousand of them.

The nanotubes can basically work just like the nervous receptors covering the human skin; in fact, aside from having a microscopic size, which makes it possible to use them in such density, they are also electrical conductors.

Therefore, with these characteristics, they are a perfect solution for systems which replicate the functionality of the human nervous system. In fact, on our fingers we can find up to 2500 nervous receptors per square centimeter, a density that is in the same range of glass fibers containing nanotubes.

Each one of the tubes is individually insulated, thus enabling it to carry a single electrical pulse and increase the receptor’s sensitivity. At the moment there are no real life applications for this technology, which is still in its early stages and is now being improved to reach a high conductivity.
This project might in the near future prove very useful for patients deprived of their sense of touch, who might be able to recover, if not all their functionality, at least a significant part.

An underwater robot for hull cleaning

Those who have been sailing at sea know well that the formation of barnacles which grow in the fissures of the hull of a boat and in the submersed part of the vessel can pose a serious threat, especially in terms of cost under the energy-saving point of view, as these formations can slow a boat down by up to 10 per cent, but on the other end, the effort to regain the lost 10 per cent can cost up to 40 per cent more in fuel.

On top of this, you should also calculate the cost, and the waste of time, to take the boats out of water for a thorough cleaning operation. All this might soon be a thing of the past thanks to Hull Bug, an underwater robot which can autonomously perform cleaning of encrusted hulls.

Developed by the US Office of Naval Research, Hull Bug has four wheels and an array of instruments and sensors on board; to get started it is placed in the water, where thanks to a sort of vacuum cleaner it would attach to the bottom of the boat to clean. At this point it starts working on its own without human intervention.

Thanks to its several sensors, it can dodge any obstacles while moving, while a fluorometric device detects the presence of biofilm on the boat. Biofilm is a concentration of microorganisms which works as a base where barnacles and parasites will grow.

At this point, Hull Bug would start its powerful brushes, an cleans the hull from any biofilm, in order to prevent formation of barnacles, rather than removing them when they are already formed. So far, tests have given positive results, and it may not be too long before we see a robot like this in any port.
