Anti fraud credit cards, with keypad and display

novembre 18, 2009 Technology No Commenti

Emue

A new generation of credit cards is being presented during the Cartes exhibition, currently taking place in Paris, and showcasing the latest technologies and developments in the Digital Security field.

The anti fraud credit card, manufactured by Emue Technologies, has the same size of your normal card, but on the inside it contains a battery with an expected life of around 3 years, which powers a processor, a numeric keypad and an E-Ink 12-digit display.

When the cardholder is about to close an online purchase deal, thanks to the numeric keypad he will be able to authenticate the transaction, entering the relevant information and a one-time automatically generated PIN which is shown on the display. This technology has been developed in close cooperation with Visa, to provide a solution for fighting online credit card fraud and usage of clone cards, and is suitable not only for online purchases, but also for those carried out via iPhone applications.

The one-time PIN code has a limited life (generally a few minutes), which makes hackers’ and credit card thieves’ job useless, as they generally are able to obtain only the credit card number, name of the cardholder and CVC 3-digit security code. This information will not be enough to validate transactions carried out via this new card, and actual use will only be possible for those who not only get a hold of the card, but also have the relevant access codes.

Currently, the solution provided by Emue is being tested by some banks in Switzerland, France, Italy and the UK, and in the future it could become the defining standard for security of our credit cards when used online.

Mantis, the largest UK-made unmanned aircraft

novembre 18, 2009 Technology No Commenti

Mantis

The UK Ministry of Defense has just completed the maiden flight of Mantis, an unmanned aircraft with a wingspan of approximately 20 meters, suitable for long-range aerial surveillance and intelligence gathering operations. Its size makes it the largest vehicle of this kind ever built in the UK, and among the largest in Europe.

Manufactured by BAE Systems, it can be easily dismantled and loaded on a transport aircraft, thanks to the lack of hydraulic parts as it is entirely electrically powered. Thanks to this characteristic, Mantis is capable of being deployed with extreme flexibility, also for carrying military equipment, ammunition and weapons within war zones, especially on rough terrains.

Its high level of automation allows it to automatically detect a sensitive target, and to transmit the relevant information to the ground station, as well as autonomously manage the flight, so that ground operators will only have to concentrate on the quality of intelligence and not on the flight operation, thus reducing any possible risk of mission failure due to human errors.

At BAE Systems, Mantis is labeled as an UAS (Unmanned Aerial System) rather than an UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) thanks to these automation features, which make it easy to be integrated with other vehicles of this kind produced by the same manufacturer and supplied to the British Ministry of Defense.

It took only 19 months from the first sketches of the project to this maiden flight, thanks to the quick interaction among manufacturers of individual system parts, and the same waiting time is expected before seeing a second version of Mantis, to be developed according to information gathered from this first set of test flights.

Mobile Phone Eavesdropping

SpyCell

To secretly listen to someone’s phone conversations, you do not need to be spies or millionaires, as today’s advancement gives everyone the chance to use devices of a high technological level and low cost, as well as easy to use even for those who are not professionals in the espionage field.

You do not need high-priced complicated machinery, as the best system for mobile phone eavesdropping, the easiest one and the one that guarantees a higher privacy level, is the mobile phone itself!

In fact, thanks to the use of a spy mobile phone, you will not waste energies, as your best friend will be the very phone of the person under control, thanks to the installation of a small spy software on the handset.

This software, completely invisible to the Spy Phone’s user, allows a third party listener to keep an eye on the activities of the handset on which it is installed, and most of all to listen in real time both to phone and environmental conversations, even while the phone is turned off!

If you doubt your spouse’s fidelity, if you think that your son is hanging around with bad companies, if you fear that your business partner or an employee are in cahoots with competitors, a spy mobile phone can reassure you.

Its software can be installed in seconds on most of the modern mobile phones using the Symbian operating system, and once it is installed you will be able to operate it remotely by simply sending a text message from your phone, whose number you will have configured as controlling number during the installation. When sending an SMS from this number, the spy software will intercept it and read it as an operating instruction, without displaying it on the mobile phone screen.

Communication between you and the spy handset is always taking place via SMS: when the phone is engaged in a call, you will receive an alert message, showing the counterpart number, and all you have to do is call the Spy Phone, and you will listen in real time without being noticed. Furthermore, all sent and received SMS will automatically be copied to you, always showing the other party’s number.

By sending a particular text message, you will receive a list of messages or calls, both incoming and outgoing, with a timestamp. For phones equipped with GPS positioning system, you will also be able to receive geographical coordinates of the phone’s current location. These functions, for example, may prove very useful in a complicated divorce lawsuit involving infidelity.

But what makes the spy phone unique is certainly the possibility to use the microphone like a covert listening device, to listen to conversations taking place around it. Thanks to this function, you can call at any time, and you will be able to listen to conversations within 5 meters, picked up by the microphone. This function is active also when the phone is off, when your subject feels safe and talks freely, revealing all his secrets to you.

GSM bug, the defining standard for long-distance surveillance

GSM Bug

Among the GSM type listening devices, that is, those hidden listening systems that feature a SIM card just like your normal mobile phone, and that are capable of transmitting their intelligence by using the GSM phone network, a special place is taken by the GSM-001 model.

In the investigation, surveillance and intelligence field, usage of GSM bugs shows undeniable advantages, especially in terms of comfort and safety, as the surveillance operation can be carried out from an unlimited distance, with a clear signal delivered by the digital phone network, and without having to use complicated and expensive radio receiving equipment with a limited operating range.

Inside a small box, the GSM bug contains the SIM card housing, mounted on a circuit board which contains the real core of the entire system. Unlike what happens with most normal listening devices of this kind, there is no need to call the GSM bug’s phone number to listen to what goes on around it.

On the contrary, thanks to its voice activation sensor, it will be the GSM transmitter to call us automatically when its high-sensitivity hidden microphone picks up a sound or a motion. And in the same fashion, but via SMS, for audio transmitters installed for example inside a vehicle, when the car is switched on or off the sensor will be activated, and the micro transmitter will send us a text message towards a preset number.

In fact, the possibility of programming its features remotely by sending an SMS, and of receiving notifications in the same format makes this listening device perfect to guarantee privacy and confidentiality.

Thanks to an SMS written in a particular format, you will for example be able to set up the number, towards which such notifications will have to be sent, or the preset number from which you can call the GSM transceiver (which will answer only when calls are coming from that particular number), or disable the GSM audio transmitter at once, and of course enable it later. You will also be able to receive a status report of the bug’s functionalities.

Depending on the audio surveillance operation we wish to undertake, we will have to choose whether to power our bug via the electricity mains, or with a normal 9V battery. The former is recommended for long-term hidden listening operations, while the latter is suitable for short term surveillance operations lasting just a few days.

Once this decision is made, you will have to configure the controlling number as explained above, and the number towards which your GSM transmitting device will call you as soon as its sensor detects a sound. It will also be possible to set the sensor sensitivity level, in order to allow it to call only when it is really necessary, and also set up the calling parameters when the vehicle is turned on or off.

For each function, it is possible to program up to three numbers that the bug will call. Of course, we will also have to make sure that, if the SIM card is a rechargeable one, it has enough credit, especially if the eavesdropping operation involves international or overseas calls.

For more information about how GSM bugs, hidden microphones and a wide range of surveillance and security devices are working, you can visit the Endoacustica site and contact our specialists, who will be glad to assist you.

Spy earpieces keep you in touch with the other side of the world, in real time

When dealing with business negotiations, two of the key factors are confidentiality and velocity of circulation of the information within a closed circle of people, in order to make sure that decisions are made quickly and with a full knowledge of the contexts and situations. Sometimes though, one may happen to need to circulate this information even outside this closed circle of people, and this must be done in an extremely discreet way.

This is exactly what happened to one of our clients, a company operating in the corporate acquisitions field. During a decisive meeting for an international negotiation, the managers of the company needed to know the subject discussed in real time. The meeting, though, had been marked as extremely confidential, with no possibility of contact with the outside world, to make sure that no prying ears, especially from fierce competitors, could hear anything and somehow interfere.

At this point, technology comes into the picture: they asked for our advice, and the person who was going abroad to join this important meeting was equipped with a wireless spy earpiece, hidden inside his ear canal, and connected via Bluetooth to a GSM watch.

This watch contains a SIM card just like the one of a normal mobile phone, and an embedded microphone. Thanks to its Bluetoothwireless earpiece connection with the , this system makes it possible to communicate with a distant third party listener in any part of the world, by means of a simple telephone call towards the SIM card’s number.

Thanks to the Bluetooth connection between GSM Watch and its invisible earphone, the outgoing signal is transmitted via the phone line towards a distant listener, while the incoming signal (the voice of the distant person) is transmitted directly to the earpiece, thus enabling its user to transmit information and receive comments and instructions, in real time and in an absolutely discreet and invisible way, while the people around him are completely unaware of what is going on.

In short, for those who are sitting in their office, thousand miles away from the place of negotiation, it will be like being there, but without being noticed. This kind of solution can also be applicable in several other fields, like for example public political debates, when a technical or scientific subject is being discussed, and the deputy or congressman may not have a specific background in this field; therefore he may need a real-time specialized consulting from a remotely connected expert.

In the case we were following, the manager went to the meeting with his foreign counterparts, well equipped with his invisible earphonespy watch duly hidden inside his ears, and with a on his wrist. By gently pushing a button, he discreetly connected himself with his colleagues, several time zones away.

The negotiation went on for a few hours and was successfully brought to a conclusion, also thanks to the possibility of sending real time information to the head office, and of receiving instructions concerning the stand to be taken, thanks to their miniature spy earpiece. Of course, after a few hours of overseas phone conversation, the mobile phone bill was severely affected, but since the deal had been closed successfully, our clients were more than happy to pay it!

An invisible plane turning into a helicopter

novel_air_concept

According to the latest news from the military supplies world, the British Ministry of Defense is looking for suppliers capable of supplying an UCAV (Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle) similar to a Stealth plane, but also equipped with rotors which make it float like a pilotless helicopter.

This prototype is to be used both in urban guerrilla warfare situations, for crime enforcement, and most of all in war zones, especially where the terrain is rough and not very safe for ground troops, such as for example the mountains and gorges in Afghanistan, where troops might be subject to ambushes while an automated plane could easily strike without any risk for personnel.

Specific requests made by the Ministry, in fact, are aimed at an optimization of results obtained by conventional (manned) planes and missiles equipped with target acquisition and pointing systems, by using new designs on UAV-type planes, both in war areas with a range of up to 900 kilometers, and in urban environment.

At the current stage, the Ministry is starting private and confidential negotiations with three industries operating in the missile, aerospace and UAV field, which will have to submit a project draft, according to requirements set, within the first months of 2010.

Among the features listed in these requirements, along with flexibility of usage that makes it possible to quickly turn the vehicle from a plane to a copter and vice versa, the possibility of being launched from board of a frigate ship at sea. The results of the development program, called
Novel Air Concept, are expected to be seen by 2015, with a first experimental operating phase.

An iPhone application to tell you why your baby is crying

Baby

For those who are about to savor the joy of motherhood or fatherhood, or just had their first baby and have not figured out yet the different ways in which babies cry, depending on what they are trying to tell us, technology comes to the rescue.

Thanks to Cry Translator, an iPhone application capable of interpreting the sound of an infant’s cry, it is now possible to understand the five main reasons which drive a baby to tears: sleep, hunger, stress, annoyance or pure and simple boredom.

Cry Translator seems to be much more than one of the millions of iPhone applications available on the market, some of which are fun, while others are plain useless; in fact, it stems from a research which took place in Spain, analyzing the different sound profiles of what can be defined as a baby’s first means of communication: crying.

The five main categories of cry are universal, and transcend cultural or environmental differences which will become more obvious with growth. In the first months of his life, when the infant has not yet received a cultural imprinting, the way that, for example, an American baby has of expressing himself (or rather, of crying) will be the same as a European one, to inform us that he wants to stop playing for a while and take a nap.

For as little as 10 dollars, you can download this software developed by Biloop Technologies, and test it on your baby. We hope that after a certain period of “training” there will be no more need to ask a mobile phone, to figure out what our babies are asking us…

A micro earpiece can be used by everyone

novembre 8, 2009 Technology No Commenti

Earpiece

There are objects that just a few years ago we thought that could only be seen in action or spy movies, and that have become widespread, or at least much easier to find on the electronics market, at affordable prices.

An example of this kind can surely come from wireless earpieces, that we generally see used by secret agents on the big screen, but that can instead be used for a range of applications much broader than the mere exchange of information.

Certainly, in the security and surveillance field, for a detective or a police agent on a mission, and especially in the military for Special Forces members, it is absolutely vital to stay in constant touch with an operating center or a base camp without raising suspicions in criminals or enemies.

Some earpieces are connected, generally via Bluetooth, to a GSM watch with an embedded SIM card, thus creating a real listening and transmission system which can be used to transmit information at unlimited distance. The benefits of this kind of devices, as well as of radio connected earpieces, can be reaped by students at an exam, or workforce operating on large areas such as construction sites, mines, agricultural properties or when shooting movies on the outside.

In the movie business, the actors themselves, who may forget a line every now and then, may benefit from having a distant prompter while shooting an open air scene; and the good old prompter pit used in theatres may be obsolete thanks to this advanced solution.
A bit of the old romance of theatres would be lost, but the artist will have the chance to perform at their best and the audience can only be satisfied. As you can see, progress is running fast, and is available to everyone!

Want to save on your electricity bill? Use the phone line!

LED Lamp

Maybe the color does not suit all tastes, as it is only produced in a bright pink which might not go very well together with your suit and tie in formal business occasions, but certainly, albeit on a small scale, a desk lamp powered through the phone line can help you save on your electricity bill.

We are talking about a LED lamp which, instead of being connected to the normal electricity mains, can be plugged to the phone line thanks to its RJ-11 connector. The small amount of power running through the phone cables is enough to light its 8 small LEDs, and provide enough light to read a book or work on your laptop while not using up electricity.

The average duration of a LED is somewhere around 100000 hours, basically unlimited: you can use it two hours a day for the next 137 years (theoretically, of course…) or leave it on all the time for the next 12 years, and all this without adding a penny to your electricity bill!

The height of the lamp is approximately 27 centimeters, with a weight of just 74 grams, and a goose-neck flexible tube to conveniently position your lamp.
Be aware though, that should you have only one RJ-11 phone plug in your home, the LED lamp would be useless, as it can not be connected to other power sources such as a normal electricity plug or batteries (there is no battery housing at all). But after all, for a whopping 4.69 dollars, we could not ask much more than this. Or not?

Inflatable seat belts, for further protection in our cars

novembre 6, 2009 Technology No Commenti

Seat Belt

Conventional seat belts mounted on our cars are stretching in case of accident, preventing the passenger from colliding with inside parts of the car while reducing the force of the impact.
Ford is planning to introduce on its production models a new type of inflatable seat belts, which further reduce pressure on the chest of back seat passengers.

Thanks to these belts, in fact, the pressure caused by the impact is spread over a surface five times larger, thus avoiding shock, wounds or even deadly consequences caused by conventional seat belts. Unlike airbags, which are inflated by means of a small explosion, these belts are inflated by compressed gas, contained in a small cylinder located under the seat.

At the moment of impact, the air fills up a sort of accordion-shaped bag which expands inside the belt. The bag is inflated in a slightly slower way if compared to the burst that operates airbags, and this means that the protection given by seat belts is smoother and with less potential risks than the ones connected with usage of airbags.

During everyday use of our car, the inflatable belt works exactly like its conventional equivalent, than thanks to its thickness and softness, this padded belt gives a better comfort, especially with higher temperatures when a normal seat belt can turn into a real pain.

Inflatable seat belts will be mounted on the back seat of Ford Explorer models sold in the North American market, and over a few years will gradually be made available for markets of the rest of the world, for safer and softer traveling!
