Miniature listening devices
Small Audio Bugs: Size, Power and Features Compared
Small audio bugs combine a microphone and transmitter in a compact device for discreet live listening. Some are complete battery-powered units; others are miniature modules that work with a separate battery, microphone or antenna.
For a meaningful size comparison, look at the entire system. A thin transmitter may need a larger battery, while a slightly thicker device may already contain one. The examples below show how dimensions, power and audio features differ across compact Endoacustica models.
Small Listening Devices: Dimensions and Features
These three models illustrate different approaches to miniaturization: a thin radio transmitter, a GSM device with an internal battery, and a Wi-Fi module with recording. Measurements are in millimeters, with approximate inch equivalents.
| Model | Dimensions | Power and physical design | Listening and recording |
|---|---|---|---|
| SPUTNIK | 9 × 18 × 2.8 mm0.35 × 0.71 × 0.11 in | Separate 2.8–4.5 V DC supply. External microphone and flexible wire antenna. | Live UHF audio to a compatible receiver. No SIM or Internet connection required. |
| NANO-BUG | 31 × 31 × 10 mm1.22 × 1.22 × 0.39 in | Internal rechargeable battery. Optional external power interfaces. | Live listening by GSM phone call; sound and motion triggers. Configuration by SMS. |
| PICO2 | 45 × 25 × 6 mm1.77 × 0.98 × 0.24 in; battery excluded | Separate 2400 mAh rechargeable battery; optional external power interfaces. | Wi-Fi live audio, microSD recording and remote file downloads through an Android or iOS app. |
Compare the complete assembly: PICO2’s measurement excludes its battery, and SPUTNIK’s power source, microphone and antenna must be considered separately. Their module dimensions are not directly equivalent to those of a device with an internal battery.
Battery Size Is Part of Device Size
Internal or separate battery
An internal battery keeps the transmitter and its power source together. A separate battery allows capacity to be selected independently of the module, but increases the total space required. This distinction matters more than the transmitter’s thickness alone.
For example, PICO2’s module is only 6 mm thick, but its battery is a separate component. NANO-BUG includes a rechargeable battery in its compact design.
Runtime depends on the operating mode
Compare continuous listening with continuous listening, rather than comparing it with standby. Live transmission, recording and file transfer place different demands on a battery.
Voice activation (VOX)A function triggered when sound exceeds a selected threshold. Depending on the device, it starts recording or triggers a call. can reduce recording time or trigger a callback when sound is detected. Any runtime benefit depends on the device and how often it activates. Maximum battery durations are best-condition estimates; actual runtime varies with use.
The Microphone and Antenna Also Need Space
Microphone design
A separate microphone allows the audio pickup point to be positioned independently of the transmitter. SPUTNIK uses an external microphone, so the small transmitter body is only one part of the assembly.
Small size does not automatically mean better audio. Microphone quality, background noise and the distance to the speaker determine how clearly conversations can be heard.
Antenna and receiving equipment
A wire antenna can extend beyond the transmitter body. Include it when comparing overall dimensions, along with any connectors or leads.
The receiving equipment matters too: SPUTNIK needs a compatible radio receiver, NANO-BUG delivers audio through a GSM call, and PICO2 provides access through an app. A miniature transmitter does not necessarily mean a self-contained listening system.
Choose Compact Features That Match the Job
For live listening without an Internet connection, a compact radio transmitter and receiver provide a direct audio link. For listening from another location over a network, GSM or Wi-Fi devices provide phone or app access. Local recording adds storage and a way to retrieve the files.
If you only need to save conversations for later playback, compare miniature voice recorders. If you need live audio, start with the receiving method, then compare the complete device size and power requirements. Frequently Asked Questions
How small can an audio bug be?
The SPUTNIK transmitter measures 9 × 18 × 2.8 mm. Its external microphone, wire antenna and power source also need space. A circuit’s dimensions alone do not describe the complete working system.
Do the listed dimensions include the battery?
That depends on the model. PICO2’s 45 × 25 × 6 mm dimensions exclude its battery. NANO-BUG is listed at 31 × 31 × 10 mm and has an internal rechargeable battery. SPUTNIK requires a separate power source.
Does a smaller listening device have shorter battery life?
Size alone does not determine runtime. Battery capacity, power consumption and operating mode all contribute. Continuous transmission uses power differently from standby or sound-triggered operation. Compare runtime for the same operating mode and battery configuration.
Can a tiny audio bug transmit without a SIM card?
Yes. SPUTNIK sends audio to a UHF receiver without a SIM or Internet connection. PICO2 uses Wi-Fi for remote listening and file access. NANO-BUG uses a SIM and a compatible GSM network.
Can a small audio bug record conversations?
Some can. PICO2 combines live audio with local recording to a microSD card. Other transmitters send live audio without storing it. If live listening is not needed, a miniature voice recorder may provide the functions you need.
Does a separate microphone improve sound quality?
A separate microphone gives more flexibility in positioning the microphone independently of the transmitter. Speech clarity still depends on the microphone, distance to the speaker, background noise and surrounding materials.
