Long-range conversation monitoring

EAGLE is a complete parabolic listening system built around a 60 cm reflector, a dedicated microphone, a preamp and headphones. It supports real-time monitoring of speech and other sounds while the operator remains at a separate listening position.

The stated range is up to 150–200 m, or approximately 490–660 ft. Source level, background noise, wind and weather affect intelligibility at those distances. Precise aiming is an essential part of setting up the listening position.

Acoustic concentration and field handling

The reflector collects incoming sound and focuses it onto the microphone. This acoustic concentration favors sound arriving from the direction in which the dish is aimed, helping distinguish the selected source from off-axis sound.

The permanently polarized condenser capsule covers 20 Hz–20 kHz and incorporates an 80 Hz high-pass filter. A windscreen is provided. Two side handles allow the operator to reposition the dish by hand, while the ¼-inch mounting plate supports tripod use for sustained monitoring.

Gain control, filtering and peak limiting

The preamp offers up to +66 dB of gain in 11 discrete steps, a 10 Hz–50 kHz frequency response and dynamic range exceeding 120 dB. RF interference resistance and a peak limiter using two optical isolators help manage signal disturbances and peaks.

In addition to the microphone filter, the preamp provides a selectable 80 or 160 Hz high-pass filter with a 6 dB-per-octave slope. These controls reduce low-frequency components that interfere with the desired audio; they do not remove all background sound.

Monitoring, recording and separate power supplies

Headphone and line outputs support live listening and external recording. Options include the DIGICELL recorder and other compact audio recorders. Input levels and connections should be matched to the selected recording setup.

The microphone operates on phantom power or a 1.5 V alkaline battery, with up to 1,200 hours of microphone runtime under ideal conditions. Actual runtime varies with use and battery condition. The preamp has a separate supply: two internal AA batteries or 5–17 V DC external power. Its aluminum enclosure includes a belt clip.
