Focused pickup for conversation monitoring

Built and assembled by Endoacustica Europe, MEGA-EAR combines a parabolic reflector, active omnidirectional condenser capsule, preamp and headphones. The reflector gives the complete system its directional pickup by concentrating sound onto the capsule at the focal point.

The system is intended for listening without approaching the source. Its stated listening distance exceeds 50 m (164 ft) in favorable conditions. Speech intelligibility depends on source level, background noise, wind and accurate aiming.

Clear reflector and isolated grip

The 56 cm dish is made of clear polyethylene that resists water and UV exposure. It weighs 0.45 kg and has a smooth reflective surface with a 4-inch focal length. The material specification applies to the dish.

Rubber mounts in the handle reduce movement-related vibration reaching the microphone. This supports handheld tracking of a sound source, while an optional tripod allows monitoring from a fixed position.

Preamp control and external recording

The microphone covers 20 Hz–15 kHz. The dedicated preamp accepts balanced and unbalanced inputs with 10 kΩ input impedance, providing maximum gain of 60 dB on XLR or 54 dB on the unbalanced input.

Headphones provide live monitoring. For recording, options include the DIGICELL recorder and other compact audio recorders. A laptop can also be used with a suitable audio input or interface. Connections and levels need to match the selected recording device.

Separate microphone and preamp power

The microphone uses an included 9 V battery. The preamp requires 12–15 V DC, with a 12 V external battery specified for portable operation. These are separate power requirements for the two components.

The preamp measures 8.64 × 10.67 × 3.56 cm and weighs 0.45 kg. The kit includes the dish with ergonomic handle, condenser microphone, preamp, headphones and cables. An external recorder is optional.
